How does the process work?
For my wedding portraits it's really important for me to talk to the bride, to get the story of her special day. I love to meet the bride with her gown in order to authentically feel the essence of the gown. We can Facetime or meet in my studio in St. Leonards, NSW. I ask questions such as: What was the highlight of your day? How did you find your dress? Why did you choose that colour? How did you get it made, with what fabrics? These details are critical to how I approach each drawing. I get a sense of each bride's uniqueness and personality....I hope this comes out in the finished piece. I will, of course ask for photos from the bride, but where possible, I also love to put certain backgrounds into the drawings because the bride may have been married in a special place and I feel this is Impotant to include.
Where do you draw?
I have a great studio space in St. Leonards NSW at 27 Atchison Street, where the light is wonderful for drawing and the environment is full of creative vibes.
Why do people buy your portraits?
Gifts, mainly. Sometimes the bride wishes to treat herself, and an illustration is a lovely alternative to photography. There is something about a portrait that seems so personal, as it is seen through the eyes of an artist. I issue gift certificates for these drawings as well, in case you aren't sure about when the bride can use it. The drawings take three-four weeks and I will send preliminary sketches to ensure there is agreement between myself and each client.
Can the bride choose a black and white drawing?
Of course! It's actually one of my specialties: pen and ink. I can add a colour to the flowers, but black and white is very dramatic. I use highest quality archival 300 GSM Archers watercolour paper, which I then wrap and ship in sturdy bend-proof packaging for shipping (free in Australia). I also include the same image on a pack of 5 greeting cards to be used as thank you cards or anniversary cards
What about bridesmaids and flower girls?
Oh, gosh, yes! Bridesmaids are lucky because they often wear really on-trend gowns and look fantastic. And flower girls are too cute, with their floating tulle and ringlets. I also do couples, because the men are really styling up these days with their pocket kerchiefs and smartly cut suits. I love to paint floral arrangements and that offers another option.
